Watch out

Skipping the brake cleaner wipe-down is the most common rookie move on this step. New rotor oil burns off in a cloud of acrid smoke on the first stop — wipe both sides.

New rotors ship with a light protective oil on the friction surfaces. Spray both faces of each rotor with brake cleaner and wipe them dry — if you skip this step, the first time you brake the rotors will smoke and stink the whole garage out.
Slide each rotor onto the front hub studs and hold it loosely in place by threading two lug nuts onto opposing studs, just finger-tight. The actual caliper-to- mount and the brake line install come in later sections.
At this point your front corner has: lower and upper control arms, , , hub, rotor, and an assembled caliper waiting nearby. When the brake hard lines section arrives, you bolt the caliper onto the and connect the plumbing — and that corner of the car is officially done.
